Australian Government agencies are facing new requirements, introduced through a Home Affairs mandate to complete a stocktake of all legacy on-premises technology environments and develop Legacy Technology Risk Management Plans. The direction is expected to accelerate modernisation and digital transformation activity across government while helping agencies better understand the risks hidden within ageing technology estates.

The timeframe implications are significant. Non-corporate Commonwealth entities are required to complete the stocktake of systems managed by or for them, maintain a Legacy Technology Risk Management Plan, and report completion to Home Affairs by 31 March 2027. Entities operating declared Systems of Government Significance face an earlier reporting milestone of 31 December 2026.
